Attendance, Chronic Absenteeism, and Truancy

Attendance is a critical building block for student learning. If students are not present, they cannot engage in learning. Attendance is a powerful signal and leading indicator of equity.  It can signal when students might need additional support and areas for system and school improvement. Chronic absenteeism impacts all students—no matter their age. Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to not read at grade level, and more likely to not graduate.

Excused and Unexcused Absences
Policy 3122; 3122P

Regular school attendance is necessary for mastery of the educational program provided to students of the district. At times, students may be absent from class or not able to participate remotely. School staff will keep a record of absence and tardiness, including a record of excuse statements submitted by a parent/guardian, or in certain cases, students, to document a student’s excused absences. The following principles will govern the development and administration of attendance procedures within the district:

A school principal or designee has the authority to determine if an absence meets the above criteria for an excused absence. Districts may define additional categories or criteria for excused absences.

Attendance Reporting on Skyward

Did you know that you can report your student's attendance in Skyward? Watch the video below to show you how, then click the Skyward logo to log into Family Access. ** At this time, not all of our schools are using this method of reporting. If the option is not available for your child in Skyward then that school is not set up yet. Thank you!

When do absences become a problem?

  • Satisfactory: 9 or fewer absences means your student can keep up and keep learning!

  • Warning Signs: 10 to 17 absences in a school year mean your student will miss a lot and struggle to keep up!

  • Chronic Absence: 18 or more days in a year (2 days a month) is enough to warrant meeting with the student and your family to discuss any challenges that we may help overcome.
