By order of Governor Inslee, all Tenino School District schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year; however, distance learning will continue. While schools are closed, the Tenino School District has been working to ensure that a variety of services continue, including meal distribution and tech support for students. All Tenino School District outdoor facilities are closed. More information will be forthcoming about high school credits, graduation, and additional options for distance learning for all students. The District Office will also be closed to the public through May 5, 2020, or until further notice. While the district office is closed, we will continue to answer phones, pay bills and support schools in providing distance learning. For help with student technology, please call the Technology Help Desk at (360) 264-3566 or email cookn@tenino.k12.wa.us. More to come. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

REMINDER All Tenino schools are closed through April 24, 2020. We wish it wasn't so...

Dear Tenino Families and Staff: As you know, we are facing an unprecedented public health crisis in our state and world. We have kept our schools open as long as possible, as recommended by state and local public health authorities. We know that in addition to education, schools provide vital support to our communities and that closure will have a major impact on our families. On March 12, Governor Jay Inslee ordered the closure of all schools in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties until April 24. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal echoed the governor’s urgency in a statement posted on the agency website. “Schools and families throughout the rest of the state should be actively engaging in contingency planning now for potential closures in their region,” he said. Thurston County Superintendents met early this morning and have agreed to a unified approach around school closure. Starting Monday, March 16, our schools will close through Friday, April 24, 2020. Public health officials have advised us that a sustained closure can help slow the spread of COVID-19. Monday and Tuesday March 16 and 17, 2020, school office staff will be available to assist families who need to pick up medication and personal items. We are currently in the process of developing district plans to support students with non-educational services as requested by the Governor and OSPI. Further communication regarding these services will be forthcoming. The Tenino School District will provide regular updates to the staff, students, parents and community via Skyward email, District and school websites and social media. This will include regular updates from local and state health officials. We recognize that this disruption in our normal school year has an impact on our students, our families and our staff. Thank you for your support and patience as we work together as a community to focus on public health. Regards, Joe Belmonte

Dear Tenino Community, I would like to provide you with some facts about Senate Bill 5395 which deals with sex education in schools and is causing much concern. I have read the entire bill and have subsequently met with Tenino School District board members and administrators regarding this issue. Below are the facts regarding the proposed law and the approach the District will take IF the bill becomes law: The facts: • At the time of this writing, SB 5395 has NOT been signed into law. The governor can sign the bill into law, veto the entire bill, or veto portions of the bill. • The bill does not require sex education for elementary students. • The focus for elementary students will be around the development and use of appropriate social skills. • Local school districts choose the curriculum that will be taught. • There is no state mandated curriculum. • Since this has not been signed into law we have not examined or chosen a curriculum to meet the new regulations. Our District’s approach to this issue: • We will not be teaching sex education to elementary students. • The school board and superintendent are committed to a commonsense approach to the implementation of this law. • The choice of curriculum should reflect our community’s values. • Parents will be able to review the curriculum and opt out of any aspect of the curriculum. We will continue to communicate with you when this bill becomes a law. Regards, Joe Belmonte

COVID-19 Letter to Families Dear Tenino families, We wish to provide families with health tip reminders and information about the respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus known as COVID-19. By doing so our hope is to avoid unnecessary drama while remaining vigilant and communicative. We understand that the spread of the virus to new regions around the world and the heightened media attention is concerning. We want to assure you that the Tenino School District is continuing to closely monitor this situation. The district is also communicating with state and local health officials, as well as the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and will continue to follow their professional guidance. As we learn new information, we will continue to provide you with updates. To read the entire letter click the link below: https://5il.co/ddt7

This afternoon a pick up truck rear ended one of our school buses on Old Hwy. 99 heading northbound. State Patrol is on the scene and no one was injured. Students were transferred to a different bus and are on the way home. Glad everyone is okay. Please be careful out there and observe those flashing bus lights!
